Why the Northwest Territories?

Located above the 60th parallel, the Northwest Territories awaits with seemingly endless lakes and unmatched vistas. The opportunities available in our communities are perfect for the outdoors enthusiast looking for adventure, a healthy work/life balance, and an escape from the hustle of the big city.

The Beaufort-Delta Region is home to the northern-most communities in the Northwest Territories. Famous for wildlife sightings like polar bears, reindeer, muskoxen and caribou, this unique region above the tree line is simply breathtaking. Popular activities include taking a dip in the Arctic Ocean and exploring the unique landscape of the pingos. With most communities in this region accessible by road, there is a full range of essential services.

Home to the Capital City of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife is a captivating mix of city life and untamed wilderness. Fully stocked with the essential businesses and services of a southern city, Yellowknife also embraces its quirky northern roots with colourful houseboats, world famous fish shacks and houses springing up from the rocks.

About the Work

The Speech Language pathologists are part of a Rehabilitation team and work in either a hospital or community health centre to provide diagnostic, treatment, preventative or educational counseling and referral services to in and out-patients ranging from preschool to seniors. The Speech Language Pathologists perform clinical and standardized assessments and may provide ongoing intervention, as well as monitor the delivery of treatment. They will also provide educational resources (I.e. programs, material, workshops) to the Western Arctic and Nunavut in school and healthcare settings.

Rather than specializing in one area, the Speech Language Pathologists will work as a generalist. This includes patients of all ages who have speech, language, voice, pragmatic, and/or fluency delays or disorders which may be secondary to loss of hearing, congenital or developmental delays, physical illness or the aging process. Types of care delivered may include improving articulation and/or language skills, increasing fluency, supporting patients using augmentative communication.

Positions are currently available in Inuvik and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Typically these positions require successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology
